The battery is from 1989, so It is beyond dead, the bulb works but I cannot get it to light.

this was intended to be a portable emergency light for buildings, it would sit on a shelf plugged in, the cord did not charge the battery or power the light, it powered a small electromagnet which opened the battery-light circuit. When the power failed, the circuit closes and the light turns on.

I cannot find replacement batteries online, so I am planning to open up the old battery, and replace the dead cells with 6 D cell batteries lined up in series, should make the 6V needed to work.
