I have this set at 18.5 degrees as a bevel. Uses BD1N steel and I’m getting shorter than expected edge retention while doing some basswood carving. Is bd1n a steel that will stay sharper with a 20-22 degree angle? It’s not terrible now. But by the end of a little working session, I’m needed to almost go further than honing to bring it back on a strop.
Maybe I’m asking too much of the steel? I honestly didn’t know too much about steel when I bought it. Still don’t as much as I should.
