Not asking to be creepy. Here’s the thing: I got my two oldest kids (14F and 10M) Opinels as training knives. They both go to a summer camp that does back country excursions, and lets the older kids have knives on those, so 14F asked if she could bring hers. We talked it over and decided the XC90 steel, which rusts when you look at it funny, wasn’t a good match for the climate and the supplies she’d have with her. I asked her if she would consider bringing a different knife, and she immediately said “I want a donut knife!”

So, she knew about the BHQ Dessert Warrior stuff, and now she has an Elementum with a pink handle and sprinkles. It was hard for her to handle at first, since it was unfamiliar and she has tiny hands. (She’s the size of an average 11-year-old. I married well, but I married short.) But she’s been practicing a lot and she’s a fidgety kid in general, so now she’s walking around the house opening and closing it one-handed and using it to sharpen pencils for homework. So I think I made another knife person. Her little brother almost definitely will be too, but I’m wondering what things are like if you’re a girl with this hobby. Do people get weird about it?

  1. I recall reading somewhere that this is mostly a male dominated sub/hobby. For most people I think they got introduced early on, mine was self inflicted lol, just walked into a store barely with my first paycheck and a SA caught my eye.

I’ve only ever met one girl who was into knives or blades the way people here are, so it’s probably safe to say it’s around 90 percent male here.

  4. I raised my daughters with an appreciation for edged tools.

I don’t think they’re into Reddit, but they’re out there cutting things safely with awesome knives.

If she likes knives and enjoys knives safely, then let her enjoy it. Just be sure to set parameters, no taking to school and stuff like that. Knives are tools. Tools used by both sexes going back thousands of years.
