So i buy a griptilian, order some used AWT scales, and as im playing with my new toy i look real close and find the most jagged and rough factory edge geometry ive seen in a while. I wish i took a photo of the before but im sure some of you had the same thing on your knives. I sharpened this knife by hand with the worksharp field sharpener's rough plate, then course plate, then the ceramic plate on their folding field sharpener because its bigger and easier to use than the ceramic rod on the guided field sharpener. Once i was satisfied with my newly established geometry I used the leather strop on the field sharpener with their green compound rubbed generously into it to polish the edge, I do 20 strokes each side, then 10, then 5, then 3, then 2, then 1 each side 10 times (the rough plate is the only exception, i use it more as a grinding plate and just rub the blade on it until im satisfied with what i see, being careful to keep each side even and at the same angle). Im much happier with the way it turned out and once I get the AWT scales on it I think this new beauty will rival my osborne. I was taught to hand sharpen by my grandfather and thats the way ive done it since I was about 9 and im thankful for the skill and the excellent quality of work sharp products. Id highly recommend them (they beat the hell out of the smooth stones id pick up and use as a kid because I didnt have any money for proper tools)

P.S. Ignore the creaking noises in the background, I live in a sailboat and thats just the lines getting tighter

  1. That’s just benchmade grind quality. They’ve never been top tier, unfortunately.
