A 19-year-old man was killed and an 18-year-old driver was seriously injured when their Ford F-150 crashed into a Colorado State Patrol vehicle and a tractor-trailer parked along Interstate 70 in Arapahoe County early Wednesday morning.
The crash happened at 6:45 a.m. while a trooper was investigating a single-vehicle crash involving a semitruck on westbound I-70 east of Byers, CSP officials said in a news release. The trooper’s patrol vehicle was partially blocking the left lane while tow trucks were removing the semi from the center median.
Agency investigators found the 18-year-old driver lost control of the F-150, hit the patrol car and sideswiped the passenger side before the truck continued into the center median, where it hit the guardrail and rear driver side of the semi.
The 19-year-old passenger had life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital, the state patrol said. The 18-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and the trooper did not report any injuries but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The name of the man who was killed will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office, and the state patrol’s vehicular crimes unit is investigating the crash.
