Ram is bringing back one of its more understated off-road packages for the 2026 model year. After a brief absence, the Ram 1500 BackCountry returns, once again giving buyers a rugged-looking, trail-capable pickup that sits comfortably between the Warlock and Rebel trims in the lineup.

First introduced for the 2022 model year, the BackCountry package was designed to take the popular Ram 1500 Big Horn and give it a tougher, more adventurous personality without stepping all the way up to the more expensive Rebel. For 2026, Ram has revived the concept with updated powertrain choices and a few tweaks, but the formula remains largely the same: a Big Horn-based truck with real off-road capability and distinctive blacked-out styling.
This time around, the BackCountry package is available only on the Ram 1500 Big Horn Crew Cab 4×4, simplifying the configuration compared to the earlier model, which offered both Quad Cab and Crew Cab variants. Buyers also get two engine options, reflecting Ram’s current powertrain strategy.
The first is the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter HURRICANE Standard-Output (S/O) I6, which produces 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque. It delivers strong acceleration and plenty of pulling power while maintaining impressive efficiency for a full-size pickup.
For those who still want traditional V8 muscle, Ram also offers the proven 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 with the eTorque mild-hybrid system, rated at 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The eTorque system adds a small boost during acceleration and helps smooth out start-stop operation.
Both engines are equipped with an 8HP75 8-speed automatic transmission.
But the BackCountry package isn’t just about engine choices. It also adds a number of upgrades to improve off-road capability.
Among the key hardware improvements is a 1-inch suspension lift, paired with heavy-duty shocks that help the truck handle rough terrain more confidently. The truck also includes underbody skid plates that protect critical components like the transfer case and fuel tank when the trail gets rocky.

Additional functional upgrades include front tow hooks, a rear electronic locking differential, and Selec-Speed™ off-road cruise control, which allows the driver to maintain a steady speed when crawling over difficult terrain. The setup is complemented by 32-inch off-road tires, giving the truck additional grip and ground clearance when leaving the pavement behind.
Visually, the BackCountry package stands apart from the rest of the Ram lineup with a mix of body-color and blacked-out elements.
The truck features black-painted lower-body sections and bumpers, Satin Black wheels, and contrast-black fender flares that emphasize its rugged stance. A body-color grille surround helps tie the look together while maintaining a more refined appearance than some of Ram’s more aggressive off-road trims.
Inside the cabin, Ram focuses on durability and practicality. The BackCountry comes equipped with black vinyl bucket seats featuring alloy-printed mesh inserts, designed to handle muddy boots and outdoor gear without worry.
The interior also includes all-weather rubber floor mats for both front and rear passengers, along with a MOLLE seatback storage panel that adds extra utility for carrying tools, equipment, or trail gear. A BackCountry badge on the passenger-side instrument panel serves as a reminder that this isn’t just another Big Horn.
The BackCountry package itself carries a $2,995 price tag and can be added to the Ram 1500 Big Horn equipped with either the Level 1 or Level 2 Equipment Group.

When configured with the package, the 2026 Ram 1500 BackCountry starts at $62,410, including destination. Orders are now open, giving buyers another option in Ram’s growing off-road-oriented lineup. For those interested in the BackCountry, reach out to your local Ram dealer for more information.
For customers who want a capable trail-ready truck without jumping to the Rebel or RHO, the BackCountry once again offers a well-balanced middle ground.Â
