Overview
The electric pickup truck segment is now large enough to offer some variety, and the GMC Sierra EV fulfills the needs of those who want a capable electric work rig that also knows how to pamper. Beneath its upmarket sheet metal, the Sierra EV shares its fundamentals with the proletariat Chevrolet Silverado EV, but its richly upholstered interior and suite of quality-of-life features give it posh appeal.
With four powertrain options and a trifecta of battery configurations, there’s a Sierra EV for everyone—everyone with good credit, that is, as the top-spec trim breaks into six figures. An Elevation Standard Range model kicks off the lineup, offering a more affordable entry point and up to 283 miles of range. At the other end is a Denali Max Range trim with 760 horsepower and a max driving range estimate of 410 miles. But if maximizing capability is your aim, the middle-child Elevation Extended Range is your match, delivering up to 12,500 pounds of pulling power.
Expert Tip: The Rivian R1T can’t tow quite as much as the Sierra EV, but its clever engineering, creative storage solutions, respectable range, and well-rounded demeanor make it our top pick in the segment.
What’s New for 2027?
The GMC Sierra EV has only been around for a few years, so it isn’t due for a rework just yet. We don’t expect anything to change for the 2027 model year.

Compare CarsEV Motor, Power, and Performance EV Motors: 625-hp dual motor (Elevation, Denali Standard Range), 725-hp dual motor (AT4 Max Range), 760-hp dual motor (Denali Max Range) Drivetrain: all-wheel drive
All variants of the Sierra EV come standard with all-wheel drive courtesy of two electric motors, one at the front and one in the rear. Power output changes depending on the trim, with Elevation and Denali Standard Range models producing 645 horsepower, the AT4 Extended Range generating 625 horsepower, the AT4 Max Range outputting 725 horsepower, and the Denali Max Range topping the lineup with 760 horsepower.
A variety of drive modes change the Sierra’s character, and the regenerative braking system includes a one-pedal driving option that uses regen to slow the truck significantly when you lift off the gas pedal. In our initial test drive of the Sierra EV, we found it to drive similarly to the Silverado EV. It’s shockingly quick and handles well for its size, but the truck does tend to get a bit squirrelly if you stab the throttle too aggressively.
0–60-MPH Times C/D 60-mph Test: 4.1 seconds (Denali)
In Comparison: While the larger and heavier GMC Hummer EV did it in just 3.3 seconds, reaching the mile-a-minute mark in just over four seconds is plenty quick for a behemoth pickup.
Towing and Payload Capacity Max Towing: 12,500 pounds
The Sierra EV provides a maximum towing capacity of 12,500 pounds in either Elevation Extended Range or Denali Max Range trim. The AT4 is rated to tow 12,300 pounds.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life EPA EV Range: 283-410 miles
The Sierra EV is available with a trifecta of different battery configurations. A Standard Range option is available on Elevation and Denali trims, offering less driving range and lower power output than the others, but at a hefty price discount. The EPA says the Standard Range model should be good for 283 miles of range. The Extended Range battery pack is rated for 385 miles of all-electric driving, while the larger Max Range pack is estimated to deliver an impressive 410 miles of range.
All three battery configurations have DC fast charging capabilities, with GM claiming that the Max Range battery pack can gain up to 100 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes at a 350kW charge rate.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe EPA City Ratings: 69-75 MPGe EPA Highway Ratings: 59-61 MPGe
The EPA estimates that the Sierra EV with the standard range battery will deliver 74 MPGe city, 60 MPGe highway, and 67 MPGe combined. The extended range battery pack received ratings of 69 MPGe city, 59 MPGe highway, and 64 MPGe combined. At the top end of the lineup, the Sierra EV with the Max battery pack is rated for up to 75 MPGe city, 61 MPGe highway, and 68 MPGe combined.
MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency. We haven’t had a chance to test out the truck on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, but we’ll update this story with test results when we do. For more information about the Sierra EV’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: The Sierra EV is offered only as a crew-cab pickup with a bed measuring nearly six feet in length. Acoustic glass and additional sound deadening make its cabin a quieter environment than the one in the Silverado EV. The Denali version incorporates nice materials such as open-pore wood and leather, as befits its price and premium mission.
Second Row: The Sierra EV’s rear accommodations are roomy, about what you’d expect in a full-size pickup.
Cargo Capacity: In our testing, we fit 21 carry-on suitcases inside the Sierra EV’s cab with the rear seats stowed. There’s also a large “frunk” up front, in the space where a gasoline engine would usually go, which offers 11 cubic feet of additional cargo capacity.
Infotainment and Connectivity Infotainment: 16.8-inch touchscreen Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Audio System: six-speaker stereo, seven-speaker Bose stereo
The standard infotainment system is a 16.8-inch portrait-style touchscreen with plenty of connectivity features and built-in apps. However, it doesn’t support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone-mirroring capabilities, and its user interface doesn’t do the best job at displaying important vehicle information like your selected drive mode. An 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster and a wireless smartphone charging pad are also standard features.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Denali and Sierra models come with the advanced Super Cruise hands-free driving system as standard equipment. This function takes over acceleration and braking and also allows you to remove your hands from the steering wheel for extended periods in certain driving situations, such as on a mapped highway, as long as you keep your eyes on the road.
Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with hands-free driving mode

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
The Sierra EV comes with a similar warranty to other General Motors products, which means three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage.
