I have several different knives that cost between $150 and $250. I use them for various tasks: work, everyday carry, hunting, and fishing.
But I don’t understand why people buy knives that cost $400 or more. After all, a knife is just a tool, isn’t it? Or do you see it differently?

I have knives I use as a tool and then I have knives ai display in cases. If you collect knives, you appreciate the special ones as more than tools. If you’re not a collector, a good sub $250 knife is probably all you’ll ever need.
A lot of knives these days are in the realm of man-jewelry. I love buying cheaper knives. The most expensive one is a Noze Dozyn in bainite-treated 52100 and that’s for the specialty steel. Would not pay a premium for looks or design when the knife is getting used.
I like the best quality and exclusive, rare pieces. Made in USA with the most exquisite metallurgy materials & process. High quality EDC is where it’s at. Yeah a civic will get you to the same destination as a Ferrari, but it’s the experiance and journey that it creates which is priceless.
One thing no one is gonna want to mention because it sounds rude/smug, but it’s the truth: $400 means a lot more to some people than others. 15 years ago I had a hard $150 limit on a knife. Those were few and they were my prized knives that I took pristine care of. My life was in a place where $150 was a very significant amount of money for me. $150 could make or break a month for me.
The day I got my Grimsmo Norseman it felt so solid and rugged I went outside and chopped through branches with it for 40 minutes like it was a hatchet. I like it and wanted to knife with it. The money means less now.
