Lately by happenstance I found a YouTubeChannel which presented a so called Surge Companion. A 3D printed thingy which immediately triggered my OCD with it’s many clever solutions for everyday problems if you carry a multitool. I watched, was baffled and ordered a copy of that thing. A few days later it arrived from Romania at my house in Germany. Since then I’m in love…
Firstly I want to clarify that I am in no way connected to the inventor and producer of the tools. I payed the regular price for my order and have no other incentive to write this post. I just want to share the bliss with you.
In the pictures you can see that the basic function is to store up to 22 Leatherman proprietary bits in the flaps, the middle part is equipped with magnets to close the companion und to hold blades, t-shank-blades and whatever is suitable. Furthermore there are 4 slots for a victorinox tweezer, victorinox pen (I dont own one yet), a handle for the micro screw driver and a handle for a long needle.
As a bonus you get 2 brushes for cleaning and oiling the Surge or whatever Leatherman you carry and a sweet little bit that holds a pin, a reset pin with handle and a glow-in-the-dark toothpick with an added hook. Also included are two spacers for slim t-shank-blades for the Surge.
That’s the companion. In my opinion a much better alternative to the bit kit from LM, only slightly thicker.
BUT: The little blue handle you can see in the pictures is the icing on the cake. It’s called a multihandle and is also invented by ArrTEH. This clever thingy holds every bit extender or ratchet on one side, so you have a fully functioning screw driver with ultra low profile (if you carry a ratchet anyway). The clou: On the other side of the handle there is a multislot, which will accept and fix (through a screw) almost every t-shank-blade, hobby knife blade, scalpel blade or whatever you throw at it. THIS IS SO COOL! You instantly have a saw, a file, or every knife you can imagine. It’s brilliant.
The companion has rails on it’s sides, on which you can slide on and fix a plethora of little clamps or fixtures. These can hold the mentioned multihandle, the ratchet or bit extender, flash lights, wire, rubber bands, spray flasks, whatever you deem necessary. Completely customizable.
ArrTEH is only reachable via mail, but he is very responsive and kind. You’ll find it in the comments under his videos. I got my order printed in hours after the first contact and on the next day it was shipped to me.
I think the stuff of him deserves way more attention. I hope some of you will be as amazed as I am.
