After a bit of a hiatus, I’ve gotten back into Microtechs. They never really had staying power as an everyday knife for me; they were either too big, too finicky and hard to actuate, or they had a styling or design cue that I didn’t appreciate. So after picking up a Cypher 2 last month I decided to try out one of their smaller offerings, the newly released Mini Hera. Mine comes with the bayonet-style DE serrated blade, and I have to say, it’s easily the best small knife that Microtech sells. The UTX-70 seemed too hard to actuate and slick, and the 85’s proportions were all off. I did like the regular Troodon, but the clip was super tight when swapped over to lefty carry, and the Dirac and I never clicked for some reason. This one rectifies all the sins of its predecessors.

For one, it’s surprisingly thin, coming in at a svelte 9mm thick, and only weighs 2 oz (59g). Its proportions are great too, with that 3” blade and 4” handle. It actually compares well to the Tactile Knife Co Bexar slipjoint in terms of dimensions, which is kind of a funny comparison to make. It disappears well in a pocket, especially in thinner pants, and is light and small enough that I could wear this in the pocket of a shirt and not really notice the weight.

I’m sold on this new design language with the new clip design and low profile glass breaker. They look much more premium and I have yet to snag the clip on anything. They are also quite easy to actuate. I can fire the Hera with my index finger, which I was never able to do with some of the older models. I gotta say, I’m a fan. Looking forward to a SE variant, and hoping for a wharncliffe!
