Received a Helle nying knife as a gift about a year ago. I thought it was pretty funny looking at first, but I started making hiking sticks and carving with it…….. and damn this is a nice knife. I know it has to do with the steel’s hardness, I think, but I’m not sure what to look for in another knife. I want to buy a larger knife, maybe not from Helle, in the near future. I’m looking for the same edge durability. Any info on this is greatly appreciated….Thank you!

  1. Helle knives are great! I can’t answer your question thoroughly, but I’m sure others will chime in. There’s more than just the steel composition, but also the heat treatment, and some brands are better at it than others. It can get technical.

My guess is the scandi grind is making it strong. Try a Morakniv. They’re cheap and also have scandi grinds. If they hold up the same way, then you know what you’re looking for in a knife.
