I need opinions between Leatherman skeletool & signal for edc. I do off-road on occasion

Im assuming you realize that is a mut in the picture and not a skeletool, correct? The signal is a marketing scheme trying to cash in on doomsday preppers and people trying to get into bushcrafting. All of its outdoor features are not really practical. The ferro rod is too short and thin to actually be useful. There is a big difference between starting a fire in your backyard in ideal conditions and starting one in the cold and damp conditions in which you would need to start one. the hammer is pointless imo. Unless you’re in the desert, you can find something to use as a hammer if need be. The whistle is a whistle, but that’s wasted space. The shapner is OK, but again, wasted space. As long as you sharpen your blade before you go out realistically, you’re not going to need it.

I love my skeletool and would recommend it. Spend the extra $10 and get the CX model. The blade is 154cm instead of 420hc, and it’s non serrated. If you prefer serrated, you can get the RX that is also 154cm

I use my signal as an edc. As I’m not regularly in the woods I don’t need the whistle or knife sharpener and had a buddy 3D print me parts that fit there and will hold 3 extra bits. I personally like it a lot. Might not have as many tools as the wave or surge but would work perfectly for the majority of people.

What are you trying to accomplish with your EDC?

The Skeletool isn’t the toughest tool in the shed, and I find it rather uncomfortable in the hand. The Signal and Curl are slightly heavier but I’m much more confident in those tools. The Sidekick and Wingman are also worth considering, just know that their wire cutters aren’t very good and they lack any support for exchangeable screwdriver bits.

A lot of people replace the Signal’s whistle with a 3D printed bit holder. If you’re gonna be alone in the wild though, I strongly encourage having a whistle in one form or another.

I love my skeletool. To me, it is the right set of tools. If i need more, I’ll walk to my car to get my toolkit. But mostly I can manage with the skeletool.
I’ve recently been looking for a replacement for my stolen skeletool. I looked at the signal, but to me it was not worth the extra weight and cost.
If you’re off-roading with a car, keep some dedicated tools in there.
