Shown here is indeed one of the examples of junky one that'll work for a few months and then start flickering/short out….and end up in the trash. It's not her, but they're about as reliable as the mag lights 20+years ago(at least in my experience). I'd say budget would be between 20-40 USD which should be good enough. She just likes to have a reliable one to walk the dogs in the evening or see if any bears are out back etc. So any extra features would probably be lost on her, just a nice squishy rubber button that goes on and off!
I will possibly get her a smaller version additionally to put in the car, doesn't even have to be the same brand. "You never know when you'll need a good flashlight!"-her words
Thanks guys!

Give her the [Wurkkos FC11C](https://wurkkos.com/products/wurkkos-fc11c-nichia-519a-buck-circuit-flashlight?srsltid=AfmBOopJZrxe710pMGB3BxqyW9jIruqFCMFwFbAP-sNCvNpuxhHynDx8&VariantsId=11968). It’s basic and simple, and yet it’s feature packed and worth at least double what its asking price is with what it has and can do. Its user interface is incredibly simple and easy to use, it has USB-C recharging and magnetic tail base for simplicity/usage, and underneath the hood, so to speak, it incorporates an excellent driver to manage its battery power and deliver good long rumtimes from an LED (Nichia 519A) that gives you excellent CRI for color rendering and detail accuracy. It’s also built durable enough to withstand drops and a few dunks in water or heavy rain. Arguably the best light you can hand to someone who is new to current/modern flashlights. And all if this, for under $25.
I would recommend the Wurkkos HD01UV.
Small, practical, easy to use, looks good, and is inexpensive.
I have one myself in purple and I’m thrilled with it.
Sofrin IF22A is great for outdoors stuff I find for a bit more distance – it’s quite a ‘thrower’ which means a bright central spot, but still illumnates around you fine – walking along a path I often find this is much better than an even spread of light, because you illuminate the end of the path/where you’re walking with the bright light and the nearer bits don’t get washed out.
Also works as a USB power bank, which is useful for emergencies – a similar one really helped me when I missed my last transport back on a mountain just as it was getting dark and my phone was about to die. So both charged the phone to find my way back on foot and could actually see where I was going too.
I’d also consider a Sofirn HS20 headlamp, which can be useful for dog walking to keep your hands free. This one comes with a spot and a flood beam that can be used separately or together. Some people don’t like the weight, but I’m fine using similar ones for trail running as well as walking.
Rather than a small one for the car, I’d be tempted to add a Tunenge S12+ for her keyring – I’ve got a similar one and use it all the time.
