Your max throw distance/candela is limited by the reflector size with the M21B.
The SFT42R is going to give you a fat hotspot. Still quite throwy, but it won’t have as much distance as, say, the Osram KW CULPM1.TG. So if you want further throw, then you can go for the Osram and any battery you want.
That’s about as much throw as you are going to get from that form factor. You may get marginally better throw with the Boost HL, but it would be a much smaller hotspot, a small fraction of the total output, and very little usable spill.
If you want more throw, a larger form factor like the L21B (with the 42R or Boost HL/HX) is worth considering. If you wanted the most extreme throw, the green W1 F1 in an L21B is the hot ticket (although it would be much less usable than an L21B with a 42R).
Quite honestly, you’ve probably hit the sweet spot as far as throw with this host goes.
If, like me, you like maximum throw, you’ll get it with the W1 (actually the green version but white still outthrows everything else).
What you may like is the SFT-25R. This has a tighter hotspot than the SFT-42R and a bit more throw.
If you put that SFT-42R into an M21C, that might give you what you’re looking for, without going to the extreme of an L21B with green W1 – which has great throw but little incentive to carry it with you.
