Any tips for removal of the rust on this knife? My buddy was tossing it out and I told him I'll take it, but I'm unsure how to go about restoration, or if I should just toss it myself
Going to be honest with you. This is a dime a dozen, most likely Pakistani made “Damascus” which is a horrible combination of metals that aren’t hardenable. They just mix up anything that will melt together. It was doomed from the beginning. I personally wouldn’t waste time on it.

If you really want to try to remove the rust, I’d try Flitz.
But, as has been mentioned, appears to be a Pakimascus blade so unless it has some real sentimental value, I wouldn’t bother.

Let it sit on vinegar for ~5 minutes and wipe off the rust. It will probably darken the Damascus pattern if anything.
Hitting it with a polishing compound would work but you’d also be polishing off the Damascus pattern which was etched with an acidic compound.
