Hey r/knives,
These are my very first knives and I kind of went big right out of the gate 😂
Over the last couple weeks I picked up this premium trio back-to-back and I’m still geeking out over them:
• Spyderco Para 3 in CPM-S110V
The classic leaf-shaped blade in one of the most wear-resistant steels out there. S110V is an absolute edge retention monster — it stays razor sharp through cardboard, rope, and daily tasks like nothing else. Super compact, great ergonomics, and that smooth compression lock. It feels like it was built to cut forever.
• Benchmade 940 Osborne in CPM MagnaCut
The iconic slim EDC folder, now with MagnaCut steel. This one nails the perfect balance: excellent edge retention, outstanding toughness, top-tier corrosion resistance, and it’s actually enjoyable to sharpen. Thin grind, smooth Axis lock, and that nice belly on the blade make it disappear in the pocket but punch way above its weight for everyday carry.
• Chris Reeve Inkosi Tanto in CPM MagnaCut with micarta inlay
The overbuilt tank of the group. Same MagnaCut steel but with a harder heat treat (~63-64 HRC), bombproof integral frame-lock construction, and that premium CRK fit and finish. The micarta inlay gives great grip, and the tanto blade feels nearly indestructible. This one just screams quality and toughness.
I’m loving the contrast — S110V for maximum edge-holding power, while the two MagnaCut knives bring better toughness, easier maintenance, and fantastic rust resistance. They’ve been awesome so far for regular EDC in California, and I’m planning to take one up to the cabin for fishing trips (quick line cuts, hook removal, gutting, and basic fish prep).
Since these are my first knives, I’d love your honest thoughts:
• How did I do jumping straight into the deep end with these three?
• Anyone have real-world experience comparing S110V vs MagnaCut?
• Which one would you reach for first for mixed EDC + light outdoor/fishing use?
