See the sharp vertical line in the blade just behind where the knufe blade ends? That is called the ricasso. Just forward of that there is a tiny little notch in the blade. This is called the sharpening choil. This allows you to sharpen the blade and not damage the ricasso. The semi circles you speak of behind the ricasso are probably just decorative.
