What's up flashlight sub? I got into flashlight when I was a teenager around year 2000. I'm glad that I kept many of the models I bought back then, I only wish I'd hung on to more of them! I still prefer Incandescent over led for daily use. I always keep 2 or 3 incans in my daily rotation. Id like to catch up on led tech since I've been out of the game for some time. My last significant purchases were some malkoff surefire drop ins 7 or 8 years ago.

Here are a few from my collection that see lots of daily use over the years. I like how the nitrolon doesn't get as cold in the winter like metal bodied lights.

  1. G3 set up with liion rechargeables and lumensfactory high output incandescent lamp assembly. I grab this one whenever I need to spot or identify something around the farm / homestead. Which is at least a few times a night.
  2. G2 I recently found in a drawer at my late moms house ( a gift I gave my brother for Christmas in 02 or 03.) it looked like he used the original primary cells that came with it then never touched it again. I threw my vintage lumensfactory Creek xpg led drop in it along with a liion cell , now its my favorite EDC. It's probably the most lightweight flashlight set up I've used, the lexan lens and light weight of the "lamp assembly " really help drop weight.

It's a joy to carry and handle. It has a rather tight hotspot which makes for a good amount of throw. A rosey tint is pleasant. I noticed lumensfactory uses nichia leds in this model now. I wonder how the throw compares? I might have to get one and try it out.

The Malkoffs come in handy when I need more spill, which is the third light in this list.

  1. G2 with lumensfactory pocket clip , bEzel mounted lanyard ring and a rare malkoff LLLL (Thats FOUR L's) 4000k led drop in I got in a group buy years ago. This is one is my dimmest lights ,I think it's like ten or less lumens, yet the beam quality produces a surprising amount of high quality, beautiful useable light for hiking at night. Runtime is soemthing like 200 hours I forgot what people were saying when they did the group buy almost a decade ago.

The neutral tint is as neutral as it gets. It's light quality is perfect in every way imo, for an led anyway. I think don mcleash designs the lens. The beam is perfectly blended l, meaning no spot of the light is more or less brighter or different in any other way than any other area of the beam. This makes it perfect for uniformly lighting up a room during an extended power outage, etc.

It being fully potted makes it heavy as a brick, and It doesn't help that i have it set up with a glass bezeled g2z head ( which i think it's nitrolon coated metal?) which really adds a lot of weight compared to the much thinner and lighter 100% nitrolon heads with plastic lens.

It's a good light to keep on for extended periods, can point it at the ceiling for all night visibility. Despite its weight, I frequently take it backpacking and will aim it across the campsite in the evening. etc. I kind of like the robustness of the g2z bezel on this Lego build, despite its weight. Kinda bummed I let a coworker use it when he was welding and melted some pin holes in the glass. Oh well, it still works.

I have a slighter brighter malkoff dropin from a different group buy that I'll take if I'm doing a lot of night hiking. It's a LLL with a warm tint forgot if it's 3k or 3500 but it's notibily brighter than the 4L version.. and the light and beam quality just as beautiful.

If I could only own three flashlights to cover all my needs for the rest of my life, id change out the lumensfactory d26 with the malkoff warmLLL and those three lights would easily cover all my needs for the rest of my life. The Incandescent lamped light could change out for a frosted p91 for ultimate beam quality, but those are getting harder to find. Id just use the lumens factory equivalent, which isnt quite as beautiful. . The p61 with frosted/pointed bulb is my grail idea of beam quality, I always keep one locked and loaded for bumps in the night but it wouldnt make my top three becuse its not as all around useful.. These 3 lights are not including a headlamp Of course.

I never got into multi mode flashlights. I've used fenixes, acebeam , Nightcore, a surefire u2, and they're great and all, but I really just highly prefer a simple on and off button and one choice of light output. If I want a different "mode" just I'll grab a different light. Because when I need a different type of light, that means I'm likely switching to a completely different task, where a different reflector design and lighting style or whatever you want to call it, would be more wanted than just a different lumen output from the same light source.

I guess rarely to never do I find myself wanting to switch light outputs while performing the same task. Another reason may be that they feel cheap to me in a way. Come to think of it, I really like feeling of the pressure / resistance of the tailcap spring pushing on the battery when using a twisty tailcap. It feels substantial and simple. Like a gun or a knife. Less complicated, no fancy computer circuitry. It's like a direct tactile connection in the process of illuminating a tungsten filament or led.

Which is probably why my most used lights over the past two decades all ended up being ones with Twisties. The nitrolon Twisties are more ergonomic for my small hands vs the bulkier anodized models- I absolutely love the feel of them- the button press is closer to the feel of old laser products twisty tailcaps found on the round body generation.., oh man, those are God level, I need to track down a few more of them for my collection. But anyway, the HA surefire Twisties don't do it for me , fine on weapon lights but for handheld give me a McClickie and I'm a happy pappy.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi to the sub. That's all I've got for now. Happy Hunting

Thanks for the review. How does Nitrolon hold up in hot climates, hot environments and direct sunlight?

Love to see these! I bought my wife a G2 model many years back and it lives in her glovebox compartment for emergency use. I pulled it out a few weeks back when getting the vehicle registration, and the cells in it are still good. Probably do need to swap them out to be on the safe side. I was/am a huge fan of the old 6P set ups. Still have a few around my house (some bored for 18650’s) that I use all the time. I think the wife’s G2 is the only one still sporting the original SureFire LED. 👍🏻
