hi, I recently made a damascene dagger and I messed up a bit and had it etched again now, but the pattern kinda disappeared because it is all over-oxidised and dark
How can I make the contrast greater, if it is possible at all? As in the last photo (that one was before the second etching)?
I thought of using very fine sandpaper, like 2000 grains per cm2.
I used 500 previously but that scratched the pattern off.
What would you do?

Try soaking it in coffee. Any idea what kind of steel it’s made out of? High carbon steel should get darker.
