my brother in laws 20/yo scandi knife he asked me to repair, I have never seen a tang situation like this before. what's going on here?

    It looks like a puukko, they’re from before batoning was a thing

    Usually the broken piece is a hook that connects to the blade tang and the other end is threaded which lets you tighten it all up with the nut in the pommel. You can fill the whole core with epoxy and it’ll be a fair bit tougher but makes replacing the handle a lot harder. Usually I’ve seen that setup with just a plain jane birch handle. The more common setup is a rat tail tang going all the way through.

    Looks like a puukko. A rat tail tang like that is common in that style of knife. How it would have snapped like that, I have no idea. Nor do I know how you’d fix it.
