Here is a fun little project I did a few days ago. I repurposed a flashlight I had that the battery died. It was a clip on that was rectangular one but I can't remember the brand or model name. I do remember how bad the light it produced was though.
I made my own pack of 2x 18650s in Parallel. With both cells I have about 5600mAh of capacity. I bought a really nice and cool push button switch a long time ago and have finally found a way to use it. I am using a Cree XP-G2 at 3000K and after looking at the other lens options I settled for a Carclo 26.5mm Frosted Narrow Spot. The other two I tried were the Plain Tight spot, which had too much of a hotspot and the Elliptical Spot lens which I can see it being useful in some situations but wanted more of a straight beam.
The driver for the LED as I mentioned came from a broken flashlight and uses Skypower SP4533 which is a stepdown CC/CV DC-DC converter.
Some of the features of the flashlight are, dimming by holding the button down, it will cycle through the dimming curve and I also added a second pink LED on the board which is activated by holding the button down when the flash light is off. I used the pink just because I don't think its something you see a lot. It also charges via Micro USB
Using the Sekonic C800 and the Lit Duo 1 you can see the color temp is pretty close to the 3000K. It is a bit magenta but not horrible but the CRI is pretty low at 74.
I just discovered the world of flashlight mods and I think I found my people. I have worked in the film industry doing lighting for the last 20 years so I am very sensitive and aware of good vs bad lighting. I love that there are other people out there who feel the same way.
