Two Benchmade builds, a Brian Nadeau production knife, and the just-released Golden Designworks Sub-Caliber v2, plus a couple of side notes, for your viewing pleasure
Photos 1-2: Benchmade 940 REK Reblade: I first tried using the old-school aluminum scales (next knife) with the purple backspacer, but realized the blade is a bit too large and it would rest against the inside. Luckily I had picked up a second BladeHQ 940BK with black aluminum scales and barrel spacers. Clip is RGT anodized Ti. I like how this one turned out, more than I had expected. Although I still sort of wish the scales had the relic’d look of knife #2. Any recs on DIY (other than “put it in your pocket with your keys for the next six months”)?
Photos 3 & 4: I think I’m sticking with the RGT clip, but I thought I’d try it on the Metonboss Frag/Oil Slick 940, and swap it for the longer purple clip. Switched them back, though, and I like it better… thoughts?
Photos 5 & 6: Benchmade “relic’d blackout” 940 build: I picked up the handle scales on eBay, and when they didn’t work with the REK blade, I realized it meant I needed another all-black Osborne 😉 so I used the M4 from the BHQ knife and made two unique 940s. I’ve tried so many clips this year but keep coming back to the standard butterfly deep carry; it satisfies appearance, feel, and function requirements almost every time. But I can’t help wondering if something else would better match the handle?
Photo 7: Like I said, I needed more black 940s…
Photo 8: After falling completely in love with the Sharp By Design (Brian Nadeau) Mini Tempest, I began exploring his other knives. This Damasteel Apex arrived yesterday and it does not disappoint. The front-flipping action is a bit “heavier” than the Mini Tempest, although I expect it will continue breaking in over time. But I love the Dama look, and the blue inlays are a much more handsome color than I had expected them to be (in pictures online, they looked a bit plasticky, but they’re anodized titanium and they look perfect on this knife).
Photo 9: SBD X Kaviso Mini Tempest: like with the Apex, this knife is impeccably made, with a fit and finish like I’ve never experienced before. And it flips with the ease of an Olympic gymnast. I get it now.
Photos 10 & 11: Golden Designworks Sub-Caliber v2, just dropped on Saturday. I went with the sky-blue crystallized ano Ti scales and black-wash DLC blade. The action on this thing is sublime, straight out of the box.
Happy New Year, knife frens 🥂
