Hi guys. My in law gave me this USMC Bolo Machete, still in its sheath and all. He as a kid painted on It and played with it. I feel like restoring it might bring the value down. Has anyone has any tips if i should or shouldn't restore it? I am a Marine myself and to me its such a collectible item at this point. He def asked if I could restkre it and i said let me ask around. What you guys think? Any help tips? Still pretty new to restoring.

Restoring it won’t hurt, if done properly. YouTube “restoration” will definitely destroy it. Those chucklefucks love slapping 5 lbs of Bondo on anything so they can cut a piece of cake for their mouthbreathing fanbase.
This doesn’t need much, really. I wouldn’t go nuts, more preservation than restoration.
Not sure what kind of paint that is on the leather sheath, but I’d start with a full wash and scrub with saddle soap. Dry, then condition and wax the leather to keep it pliable and prevent cracking.
The bolo knife itself… I don’t think there’s anything I’d do other than minor cleaning, oil the wooden grips, and maybe sharpen it up. Hell, you can use this thing (NOT abuse) without harming its value, it’s that much of a tank.
That said, if put on display, keep the knife outside the sheath. The leather can trap atmospheric humidity against the steel and cause rust. Looks like the blade has a decent patina to protect it, which is why I did not suggest any kind of polishing or sanding if the blade. Rub it with oil or wax, and it’ll look badass on a shelf/wall next to the sheath.
