Iām not an expert, but D2 is a high-carbon steel, so this might actually be a protective patina that has developed over time.
D2 is considered a “semi-stainless” steel. It *can* rust and some makers have more reports of rust than others. For a quick removal, a I’d suggest what I suggest for guns; take a regular pencil eraser and rub any red rust off. Any blackish spotting underneath is patina and is fine to be left on.
