Every August the Gates of the Mountains Boat Tour company, in Helena MT, takes four bat cruises into the Gates of the Mountains on the Missouri River. A bunch of bat biologists join me and we put on a bat talk and watch as thousands of bats emerge in the canyon at dusk. This is my Superbowl event for flashlight ownership. We’re not shining on any roost sights so we use white light to light up the bats. My big guns are the Acebeam L19 (Osram) and Fireflies T9R. The MVP is the T9R every time. I get asked all the time which light I recommend and unfortunately rarely recommend the T9R to just the average muggle due to the complications of Andruil, so the L19 gets recommended most of the time.
As you can see, I have about a dozen red light emitters that I stick to the boat frame. They provide light for people to see but don’t attract insects and they’re not blinding. The red light is also not visible to the bats.

Other star players included the Fireflies T1R, Wurkkos TS11, Sofirn if22, and Acebeam L35. I usually pass these lights out to excited youngsters who love to help spot the bats.
