This may be a long story. But I’ll keep it short. Last week I had to put down my dog of 12 years. He was energetic and healthy up until he died suddenly. He was my bush dog. We went on thousands of wilderness adventures together. He chased off so many bears and even scared off a mountain lion once. He was a true stud. A week before he died, we were hiking in a riverbed and he found a piece of a broken deer femur that had been tumbled and sanded smooth. I took it home because it was a cool bone.

Now for the story:

On all our adventures, my bush knife of choice was a Cold Steel Recon Tanto, SK-5 carbon steel. I have beat the hell out of that knife since 2021. It has been a fantastic bush beater knife. The handle has started to come loose, however.

When my dog died, I asked a local blacksmith/knifemaker if he could use the bone to re-handle my knife using the bone my dog found. And make a brass guard/pommel.

He said no problem. And it was money well spent. Here are the results, as well as a photo of my dog, King Hasselhoff. Or “Hassel” for short

Now, i get to carry a memory of my best friend with me wherever I go. RIP
