After noticing some strange details around the LES, he decided to tear the LED down, and discovered that inside the so-called “round DIE” LED there actually is a square DIE (and phosphor layer) which was partially masked off with white silicone.
A quick measurement of the LED with the full LES exposed he measured up to 60% higher luminous flow, as well as a higher current capability than the partially covered LED had.
