So, I have this old knife. That I think is a Bowie knife or at least some type of survival knife. It has languished away for years in a garage at an old trailer home that my family bought from some old dude when I was a kid. The guy had some stuff left in the home that my family would return years later, but the majority of it he didn’t care for.

Now I have taken the knife for myself and began a project of restoring it. Years of wanting the big cool knife and when I get it, it is covered in dried mud and rust. The sheath falling apart with only tape holding it together.

I went to work. I replaced the sheath and have polished most of the rust off. I still got more work to do on it, like sharpening it. However the handle grip has stopped me. It is covered with this black rope that has aged and it snapped while I was polishing it. I need to put something else on the handle now, but I when tried to look up anything similar that I can get, I couldn’t find anything like it.

The issue is that I don’t really know what specific type of knife and what manufacturer made it. Just that it is stainless steel and from Taiwan. I am not a knife expert by any means and just doing this cause I like this knife a lot.

If anyone here can help me, I would appreciate any clues at all! I will provide pictures I took after polishing it.
