My son is turning 8 and I wanted to get him his first knife for his birthday. Which of these 2 options would you recommend? The Mora Scout 39 Safe? Or the Wood Jewel Scout Knife with blunt tip? His middle name is Birch so the handle material has significance. Thank you, all!

Honestly I don’t think it matters. My first knife at 8 was a Schrade sg7 outback. I had cut myself when I was very young and I found one of my grandpa’s pocket knives so I had a respect for them already. But mostly being in scouts and learning knife safety and how to use them safely and how to take care of them really helped more than any features of the knife.

I would’ve thought the wood jewel was cooler with the caribou on the sheath at that age. Probably can’t go wrong either way. Also the wood jewel looks finished where the mora looks like it could use some oil on the handle and the sheath, might be an easy small project to teach him how to care for his things.
