Hi all,
I’m new to this forum, but (a little) less new to Reddit, and I have the following questions:
First, a brief background: I’ve been been a long-time admirer of mulitools but never made the commitment. Since I see many mutlitool users end up owning *multiple* multitools, I figure I can afford *one* expensive gift to myself, so I’m not “price sensitive” on this purchase. I *am* interested in getting the most versatility out of the weight and size of the package.
I am not brand specific, though I’ve assumed it would be a Leatherman until I saw the offerings from SOG. I found, but have not yet watched, YouTuber Project Farm’s review of many multitools, linked here: **Best Multitool (TOOL KNIVES)? Leatherman vs Gerber, SOG, Victorinox, DeWalt, Mossy Oak, Ozark** [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9E2PjjdCAM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9E2PjjdCAM)
So…can anyone recommend **the best multitool for automotive/motorcycle and firearm repair and maintenance?**
I know I’d like a large “Bit Accessory Kit” (similar to what Leatherman offers, in a dedicated pouch) and I’d like the kit to either have both metric and SAE sizes, or to allow me to load it with the “bit ends” I’d need, be they Torx, Allen, etc…. I’d also like the “Bit Kit” to hold both a ratcheting extension and a second, straight or “flexible” extension.
**I’d also like a NON-marring pin to push the assembly pins out of firearms**, for cleaning, etc…, such as are found in the AR-15 platform. (See Leatherman “Bit Kit,” but it does not address the need for the gun-assembly pin pusher: [https://www.leatherman.com/accset008.html](https://www.leatherman.com/accset008.html)). Since I’m new to (modern) firearms I’d love any suggestions others might have for other, firearm-specific tools it should have.
The jaws give me trouble, as **I wish there was** ***both*** **a crescent wrench-type adjustable jaw, for speedy adjustability, but needle-nose jaws, too.** (Leatherman’s ltd. “Garage Release” of their “Mr. Crunch” had a “Double Pliers” system, where the blunter jaws could be “overlayed” with a type of “shealth-needle nose jaws” as seen here: [https://www.leatherman.com/batch-001-mr-crunch-833022.html](https://www.leatherman.com/batch-001-mr-crunch-833022.html)
But unlike the (discontinued) “Mr. Crunch,” I’m looking for the non-needlenose jaws to be flat, like a crescent wrench rather than toothed, so as not to mar the surfaces of hex nuts and bolts. And like on the Mr. Crunch, I’d like the single set of main levers to operate both jaw sets, just as was done in Leatherman’s “Mr. Crunch.”
I would also like room in one of the pouches for some type of small, tough, bright, **LED flashlight**.
Other tools I would find helpful would be “sprung scissors,” wire strippers and cutters, metal and wood files and saws, etc….
All that said, I do like what Leatherman’s Garage “Free” release has which (if I understand it correctly) is that virtually all the tools held closed by magnets, so as to allow one-handed operation of all of them. While that’s only a “nice to have,” I mention is in hope, and perhaps so that others who haven’t seen that might be interested in that type of system, as well.
>Here is a description of their “Free” collection:
*Our most revolutionary Leatherman tools yet, the* [*FREE® collection*](https://www.leatherman.com/free-collection.html) *gives you the ultimate in easy-to-use features.* ***They move like magic thanks to magnets which let you access the tools with a smooth, frictionless feel.*** *Work and multi-task with speed and confidence because* ***every feature on the FREE® series can be used with one hand and automatically locks into place****. Plus, you can customize the* [*FREE® P4*](https://www.leatherman.com/free-p4-585.html)*,* [*T2*](https://www.leatherman.com/free-t2-579.html)*, and* [*P2*](https://www.leatherman.com/free-p2-583.html)*.* [https://www.leatherman.com/free-collection?utm\_source=pepperjam&utm\_medium=55448&utm\_campaign=55448&clickId=4431105950](https://www.leatherman.com/free-collection?utm_source=pepperjam&utm_medium=55448&utm_campaign=55448&clickId=4431105950)
The “Free” magnetic-locking system is not a “must have”–I just thought it would be a cool benefit.
But regarding my main request, i.e., **a multitool for automotive, motorcycle and firearm use**, alternatively, if nothing like this already exists, **can anyone recommend a company that builds to order**, so I can get something as close to what I seek as possible? (I know, I want “the Moon on a Stick,” right? (Guilty as charged.) LOL Thanks in advance–and Happy Fourth of July to ALL!!
