i’m pushing the back of the blade with my thumb and it won’t move at all. if there’s a lock on the knife, where is it?. it’s a kinzua from case knives.

You want to push that part away from the centre line of the knife. The blade can then hinge closed.
Commonly called a “frame lock.” Glad you got it sorted out.
