Leatherman vs Victorinox CAN OPENER

  1. Which one do you prefer and why? I really need to test them out, but so far have only used the Vic opener which seems to work rather well.

I prefer the Victorinox. Once it’s in the can, you just rock it and push, and it goes so smooth. The leatherman, you have to pull it back and rock it, and it’s not as smooth. You almost have to take bites at it.

  3. I prefer the Leatherman style between these 2 for nostalgia reasons. I’ve opened a LOT of cans of Dinty Moore beef stew while camping with my dad with that style with an original PST. No experience with the Victorinox so can’t really add much there.

I have used both, a lot.

    Leatherman is better for cans.
It is very much technique based, but when you use it keep it latched to the lid, and rock it up and down while rotating the can. Opens very smooth and fast.

Victorinox is similar but opposite rotation and i find it is more awkward.
Vic has the small screwdriver tip though which is more useful.

Victorinox is a better “can opener”. Once you get it “into” the lid you can literally just rotate the can around it in order to open the can.

Leatherman takes more work, but it can be used as an ersatz package opener, as well. I use the one on my Rev at work all the time, because some of the packages I receive daily need to be protected from blades when opening, as nicks to the contents can lead to testing failures.

Personally I usually prefer the Leatherman one with the claw design. The Victorinox one has the potential to work much faster if you grip it tight and put your shoulder into it, but I prefer comfort over speed. I find the Leatherman takes far less effort, it’s just a slower process. The can opener on the Leatherman Surge and SuperTool 300 has a longer claw, takes bigger bites and is just an overall more pleasant experience than either of these. Not all claw can openers are equal, I don’t much care for the old Leatherman PST can opener and would definitely prefer a push style Victorinox can opener instead.

I’m way faster, cleaner, and safer with the Leatherman. Hated to see the other style go on P4/P2, but they make a pretty good gouge when sharpened.
