Hello Knife Nerds!

This is going to sound stupid, and I've been spending the past day doing this so far but how does one remove the Spyderco large pivot to change scales? I think it's stuck for me? it's really not coming off and I don't know what I'm supposed to do…

Here's what I've tried

Alcohol soaking

Hair dryer

Rubber band on the screws

Uh, don't flame me for this….breaking off the original micrata scale (BY ACCIDENT I SWEAR IM SORRY.)

etc etc

Anyways send some help guys. Please.

Did the smock ever come with micarta scales? If they’re aftermarket and you’re not the one who swapped them they may just have too much or the wrong kind of loctite.

If it has the red loctite, take a soldering ironing and heat the screw and it will release.

You probably need to make it hotter than a hair dryer can to break the bond, but that won’t be much use if you have already stripped the screw.

At this point you might as well try some very toothy pliers, like Chanel locks or even vice grips. See if you can grip the sides of the screw head.

Last resort, grab a file or a cut off wheel on a grinder or dremel and cut a slot for a flat head.

You will need to buy replacement hardware in addition to new scales.

I’m going to assume you have the correct size torx bit first off. A mini torch type lighter has never failed me. Hit it for only a couple seconds and wait a couple seconds then try. Repeat this until it moves.
