I cut up some leather garden gloves and lined the case 3 sides. The Leather has memory effect and stays molded (palm of glove had largest flat area). Now the batteries do not rattle and are thrown in back-packs with keys and all. I'm sure they would also fit button tops as there is roughly 7mm free space

Well i don’t let them bang around in a tin can, but i’m not as committed as you. If I were headed out for backpacking or some other activity where spares might get wet, I think i’d sort out a waterproof option. But for now the little cases they ship in are fine.
