Hi all,
Randomly decided to get into knives this week and purchased a kizer harpoon mini in 3v as a "roughing"/general use blade along with some flexcut knives for wood working.
This kizer is supposedly a flat grind but cuts noticeably worse on basswood than these flexcuts. I get that the bevel on the flexcuts is much… Longer (I don't know the terminology) but is the harpoon mini supposed to be super bad in this role? Maybe it's just meant to stab stuff? Admittedly, I asked AI and they said it was g2g so that's on me.
I'd like to keep the kizer as it's kind of awesome looking but am I expecting too much out of it? Do I need to try sharpening it more? Any recommendations for other knives that might fit the general "roughing" out role? Yes- I am aware that the flexcut I have pictured is the roughing knife but honestly I kind of just want an excuse to buy a new knife.
edit: I'm making a gnome … that's it.

Do you have a Morakniv or Opinel? You should try using those, if you keep having trouble, the knife is not the cause of the problem. Try making smaller cuts.
The edge angle is completely different between the two.
The Kizer harpoon has a factory edge of ~44 degrees inclusive and the wood working knife maybe 26-28 degrees inclusive.
World of difference, especially for woodworking to have a very thin and sharp edge.
It’s the thickness behind the edge that makes the Harpoon so ill-suited for carving.
For small whittles that flexcut is really all you need, but if you want something a bit bigger for shaping or whatnot, look up a sloyd knife.
