Your not really serious about self defense if the gun is stuffed under your junk and unloaded. Also, that looks like cheap fmj target ammo, you should have hollow points in a self defense weapon. Fmj are going to pass through and cause damage beyond your target.

i feel like pepper spray or even a taser may be better for you effectiveness, space, and efficiency wise than your current gun. you could get a gun safe at home but have quicker access to your self defense if you needed it because right now if something happened you 1. need to find the gun in your (snugly packed) bag 2. need to find the ammo 3. need to have steady hands to put the ammo in the gun 4. need to be able to aim accurately and fire quickly
and all of this needs to happen quickly enough that not only no one else gets hurt but also you dont miss your window on presumably a moving target. a taser and/or pepper spray seem like much quicker acting items (remove from bag → use) so maybe consider those for day to day travel instead?
