I think it’s time to send this knife to Valhalla (or the land-fill … whichever is easier). I found this Schrade in a parking lot 10 or 12 years ago. It looked basically like it does now when I found it. It looks like the previous owner either damaged the blade, or just wanted grinder experience … but the whole edge was ground back maybe an eighth of an inch or more! I *thought* maybe there were serrations and the original owner ground them away … but I think I’ve found pictures of this knife on the web, and this particular version didn’t have serrations … so who knows what they were thinking?… this is a Schrade “Tactical Liner-lock” that was sold a while ago in a 3-pack of knives … I think it’s worth about $10! I don’t even know what the steel is, and can’t figure it out.
I threw this in a drawer and forgot about it for years … only recently, I’ve gotten into knife sharpening, so I’ve used this as my learning tool … hand sharpening, and KME system. I have even been working on trying to restore the Tanto primary point which was rounded over from the previous owner.
All fun … but now the blade is so thick behind the edge that even after a sharpening, it seems to bind up in cardboard so quickly. Also, it’s NEVER held an edge … I wonder if the temper was damaged during the “re-profiling” the previous owner did?
I’d entertained the idea of thinning the blade by hand on my diamond stones … but frankly, given I think the temper is shot anyway, I’m just going to save my time, and the wear and tear on my stones and send this one to knife-heaven.
