Today I took a 21700 Samsung 50S out of my flashlight to swap it with another 50S. When I put it into the blue tube, something smelled very bad but I didn’t understand what was happening. I moved the battery in the tube a little and it started smoking. I let out a yelp and immediately ran to put the whole thing outside my house. I disposed of it later in a dedicated bin for electronics and batteries.
My suspicion is that the blue tube that is used to hold some batteries while they’re being shipped (these are from ffl) can short the batteries somehow. There are electronics in them and I don’t think they are made well to store batteries. You don’t need metal contacts to store batteries. So imo if you are using these tubes to hold batteries, be careful. I got rid of mine.
I tried doing a search and haven’t found anyone else who had a problem with this battery. Just be careful whenever you are handling them, and keep them away from flammable stuff. If a battery ever starts to smell really bad, something is not right and you need to get rid of it asap. Stay safe everyone!

I’m not familiar with those tubes, but I would guess they originally had some sort of plastic cover on the negative side to prevent it from things like these?
