Hey All,

Just having a bit of a brain freeze, but I am in the market for a new folding blade. Need help breaking the tie between some classic designs, nothing too fancy.

I have used the Spartan Ronin Shoto for several years (it was gifted to me) and it has served well with frequent but not too hard use, but the tanto blade does have limitations for utility use and CTS XHP steel is a pain in the arse to sharpen. I want to retire it to the bedside drawer backup role.

I am weighing up between:

  • Spyderco Paramilitary 2
  • Benchmade Bugout
  • Buck 110/112

I do not mind spending a bit of money to get a better performance steel as I do not plan to own tons of knives but do expect them to perform for years, prefer a smooth fast one handed locking mechanism, and want ease of sharpening/corrosion resistance over raw toughness. Main uses are opening boxes, cutting tape/cordage, cutting paper and occasional field use on shooting trips.

Thoughts? Especially from owners of the above.

Spyderco Manix 2, or PM2 or pm3 depending on what size knife u want.

The PM 2 and Pm 3 have the compression lock, which is my favorite locking system. Definitely one hand closer, Manix 2 has a ball bearing lock, very similar to a crossbar lock. Scratch the Bugout off your list.

The Bugout is not trash, but imho, it isn’t worth the $$. Benchmade has lost touch with the market and their prices are ridiculous for what you actually get. Spyderco is much better, for the same or similar price. The pm 2 has seen more picket time for me, than any knife I own. And I own over 129 folders.

I am a Benchmade fan don’t get ne wrong, the bugout doesn’t do it for me though. That being said the Buck 110 is an icon! Infact there’s one on my hip right now. There’s also a 940-1 in my pocket.

I should add G10 handles is the minimum and a stainless steel is a must.
