For starters I'm not too sure if I like the magnetic stripes being black and wanted to ask for oppinions. I'm thinking either spray paint or just gluing a piece of paper over it.
I took the classic display case (around $70) they sell everywhere and flipped two of the shelves on the side. Secured them to the case with screws on each side (measuring is important). Then I cut up the magnetic tape (~$8) and glued it evenly on the shelves.
And that's it. Took me probably 4 hours uninterrupted. Bonus is that this proces is reversible so you can come back to having 4 shelves with only small holes visible. This mod nearly doubles the capacity of knives you can store + now they can be fully open.
tips: The original glue doesn't stick very well so I used extra glue (chemopren) and clamped it for 24hrs. The tape is not straight after cutting so I recommend bending it the other way right before gluing so it doesn't tempt to peel off.
Downside: your blades will get magnetised so don't store them this way if you work in dusty places or with metal shavings.
Equipment used: drill (bits: 2mm, 2,5mm, 7mm – I pre drilled every hole and borrowed the screw caps), screwdriver, any universal glue, clamps (you can just stack something heavy on it like books)
