Hey r/knives, new to the sub so hello everyone! I don’t post much on Reddit, so if this is the wrong place to post this just delete. I am curious about buying my first OTF, I am conflicted between Microtech or Hogue. I have always wanted a Microtech but I work at an FFL and have access to Hogue at wholesale cost. Would you go Hogue or Microtech knowing my position? I have yet to hold either but the hogue is growing on me a lot and I see quite a-lot of positive feedback. Would love some help possibly making a decision. Thanks a ton! 🤙

I would go Hogue Counterstrike for your first. It’s a great deal even before your discount. Check out LeftyEDC’s YT review – he says it’s one of the best otfs he’s ever handled.
Honestly, I would do Microtech otfs only if you find a great deal new or used. There are so many other great options at reasonable prices (Axial, Guardian Tactical, EMP EDC, Core Edge, EOS, Maxace, Kershaw, Hogue, etc.).
Are you considering the Gen 2 UT only, or have you looked at the Gen 3/4 too? I am admittedly biased as an ex-MT employee. I have two Gen2 UTs that are in my EDC rotation and I enjoy both of them. Build / material quality and the warranty / spare parts are great peace-of-mind for when I’m using my knife at work.
Can you buy the Hogue to sell at the store and give it a try, or do they have strict contracts?
I have a Microtech Ultratech D/E that I absolutely love, the only thing I would change is the blade shape and go with a tanto/tanto combo edge, other than that I have absolutely no complaints and think Microtech make some of the best otf’s out there! Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of other good choices and a few that offer a better/cheaper price, but over all I think Microtech are the OG’s and make a great product even if it comes with a bit of a premium price mine has been well worth the cost.
