Hi everyone, I don't even know if it's correct to post a question in this sub, if so I apologize, but I wanted to ask if in your opinion a tool like the one in the photo can open the shell for example of a laptop, or some device with a snap-on shell, in short those shells that usually require the help of a flat screwdriver or something like that, I'm just concerned about whether it's thin enough to fit through and open. What do you recommend? Something that isn't bulky or heavy enough to attach to a set of keys. I thank in advance all those who will respond!

Oh and of course happy holidays!

It probably depends on how thick the point is on the pry end of the tool. I have a Gerber Shard (very similar to wha you have pictured) and it could probably pop open a laptop case.

You can always file down the pry end to get it thinner, but not too thin where you have a blade (unless you want that)

  4. I would check out the plastic ones from IFixIt. They are less likely to damage your device compared to something metal like this.

First, yes this is a good place to ask. They have the question tag for a reason and you used it appropriately.

Second, its difficult to know how thick the end of the pry bar will be. Sometimes you can tell by the photo but no always. I have 2 recommendations.

    1) find a pry bar where the corner is ground slightly sharper. It would have an extra bevel vusible in the photos.

    2) sharpen it down yourself if its too thick. Pry bars have a soft heat treat so they’re usually easy to grind down. Should be able to use any knife sharpener to do it, but some cheap medium grit sandpaper would work best then polish the surface up with a fine grit whet stone or ultra fine sand paper.

Kershaw has one. Idk what it’s called but I’ve had it on my keychain for years. I had a shard before and it was a little pokey in my pockets.

Nope, not a good idea. The material is much too hard for a plastic shell. It would cause damage.

What you’re after is a “spudger” . These are plastic tools designed exactly for the purpose of prying apart plastic device shells. These come in a range of forms, and are very inexpensive.
