    There’s a lot of debate about what this is… sword breaker/catcher, a point for blood to drip off from. Consensus is that it’s just a traditional design feature that had some very loose associations with religious symbolism

    I believe it’s an aesthetic cultural thing, I’ve heard it signifies the trident of Shiva. Might have other uses.

    My understanding is that it provides a shock relief point and keeps liquid from dripping onto the handle and making it slick or sticky. Tradition would have it in the shape of a cows hoof. This one is not shaped correctly.
