Should just have to push that piece outward, hold it there, and close the knife

My best guess is it’s a liner lock knife. The black piece probably *is* the lock and you’re just not doing it correctly
You can look up how to close them online. I would post a picture or video for you, but I’m carrying an OTF today.
There should be a bit of the handle (liner) preventing the blade from closing. Likely the black piece. Push that outward, toward the side of the handle it is connected to. Keep your fingers out of the way as best you can and close it.

The black area on top is where you push it. to be certain, you can also put some tape around the knife itself to be protected. Honestly, I think that isn’t a good way to do it itself.
