Some of you may remember a couple of weeks ago I posted looking for suggestions for an edc fixed blade and an edc folder with the following conditions:
1) 3.5" or less blade (so that they can legally be concealed in CO
2) Something for the outdoors and something with a bit more urban/tactical application
3) Solid, quality construction.
4) As robust an "all-around" steel as possible
Well, welcome to my two new daily carries: The White River Ursus Cub and the Cold Steel Code 4. These are my first two "premium steel" knives, so I spent an inordinate number of hours looking up metallurgic data on different types of steels, heat treats, youtube reviews, etc. all while I assume my wife decided I must be going through a midlife crisis.
After about the nth hour of research, as my wife packed up our kids and bags in the car to "go to her mother's," while I "figure out which [I] love more, my knives or my family" I finally settled on these 2 knives.
The White River Ursus Cub – USA Made, Magnacut steel (I know, I spoiled myself a bit), natural micarta handles, with what I'm told by the interwebs is an impeccable heat treat for the steel. This is my more "outdoor-geared" option with a drop point blade and the perfect size for about any camp task, including witling. The 90 degree spine lends itself well to using a fire steel, which is something I actually use quite a bit when making a camp fire.
The Cold Steel Code 4 – Taiwanese made (the "Good China"), S35VN steel, anodized aluminum handles, and once again with what I'm told is an excellent heat treat. The tri-ad lock was a clincher for me. I chose this steel since it will be clipped in my pocket where it's bound to get sweaty, and I added grip tape to the handles in case the slick aluminum become slippery with the blood of my enemies, or you know, other fluids.
I got both of these knives off of Amazon (which may have been risking it), but they were sold by and shipped from Midway USA, which I hear is pretty on the level. They came sealed in their original packaging, all their markings seem to be in place, and the bar codes matched these particular models. Seriously though, if there’s any reason I should worry that these are fakes, please let me know, lol.
All in all though, I look forward to many years of use with these beautiful knives. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to call my wife and kids, to see what they got for Christmas from my wife’s hairdresser friend Gary… he sure has been spending a lot of time with them lately, which is nice.
