I have a serrated kitchen knife with these strange indents on the spine of the blade that form a zigzag when viewed directly from above. I'd like to know what they're for and what the knife is intended to cut. The only guess I have is that it's for cutting something sticky that would otherwise get stuck to the blade, and this is supposed to detach the blade cleanly as it passes through, but I'm sure it's intended for something specific. Any ideas?

probably mostly decorative, but possibly for sawing through frozen foods
Used for cutting pastry I would guess, similar tool below
