I got into knives few weeks ago and still learning. I really do not know anything about them yet but I wish to remedy this. My friend gave me this knife and told it is a good starter knife. Feels quite solid though and heavy. The wood is not real wood which is a red flag. Is this a chinese knock off?

It’s not a knock off. It’s just not a brand name knife.
A ” fake” from China will have counterfeit design and logos.
This is just a knife.
Enjoy your new knife.
Then start saving up for a brand name knife you like.
It’s almost definitely Chinese but not a knockoff of any knife I’m aware of. Just a cheap knife you’d find at a gas station or something. If you’re looking to get into “name brand” knives, start with Kershaw, Civivi, CRKT, or budget Spyderco’s to name a few.
