In 2017 Nitecore released the NU25 headlamp which came with some very unique features:

– high CRI white reading light (20 lumen)

– two step red light (1 / 13 lumens)

– very lightweight design (50g with stock headband, 45g with softer 3rd party headband) that makes it comfortable to wear for longer periods

After a 7 year long wait Nitecore has eventually released not one but two functional successors:

1) the Nitecore NU30 which is basically a NU25 on steroids. It comes with a much larger battery and stronger LEDs but is also twice the weight (93g vs 45g) which makes it way less comfortable to wear. The NU30 may be great for hiking but I still consider the NU25 to be superior for camping purposes like navigating the campsite or reading in the tent.

2) the Nitecore NU20 classic*, which is very similar to the original NU25 but with USB-C and an improved battery indicator. I haven’t ordered one yet as I prefer having a headband instead of a rope and the 16% performance increase of the new in-house UHE LEDs doesn’t sound very impressive tbh. From the 4 NU25s I currently use on a daily basis, none has died on me but it’s good to know that there’s a replacement available now.

(*unfortunately Nitecore re-used the NU25 product name in 2022 for a runners lamp that is totally unrelated to the original NU25 product from 2017)
