Which hunting knife to carry when bow hunting where I can’t carry a firearm?

    The Buck and the folder. All of those other knives are nonsense.

    Wondering which knife you would recommend I carry to not only help process game (note that I will also carry a smaller pocket knife for detail work) but to potentially use in a self-defense scenario if attacked by a mountain lion or black bear when hunting using archery equipment in area that prohibits firearms.

    Note: I do **NOT plan to chop wood with the knife,** I have a hatchet in my truck I’d use for chopping wood at the campsite.

    The hunting knives I have, in order from left to right:

    -Buck 110 folding knife, lightweight and very practical for other than self-defense uses, but slower to deploy, and smaller than my fixed blades;

    -Buck 119+, lightweight, classic and popular fixed blade hunting knife, only thing I don’t like about it is the leather holster it comes with is kind of hard for me to reliably draw very fast even after some practice, I could spend $50ish dollars and get a Kydex sheath for it that would probably allow a lighting fast draw.

    -Muela stag handled bowie style knife, only a little bigger than the Buck 119, but significantly **heavier**, it has a tang through to the end of the hilt, the leather sheath it came with allows me a pretty quick and easy draw. Its stag handle is also rougher than the smooth phenolic handle of the buck, so it feels more secure in my hand.

    -Muela “Caribu”, this is an absolute dagger, razor sharp on both ends, heavier and bigger than the Buck knives, but at least its sheath allows for a quick draw. I have no doubt this could be plunged through any animal’s chest.

    -Muela “Alcaraz-22”, this is a LARGE bowie style blade, **but lighter than it looks**, I really like the way it feels in my hand, but unlike my other Muela sheaths, this one fits the knife kind of loosely, and the blade can come out of the sheath quite a bit without being un-snapped, to actually carry it in the field, I would want to buy a kydex sheath for it that I would probably have to get custom made, which would not be cheap.

    -Bear and Sons giant Damascus steel bowie blade. Obviously this was made more for collector’s, and it’s gorgeous to look at. I carried it just once while bow-hunting, and it was uncomfortably heavy to carry around while hiking, though I could get used to it. It feels like short sword more than a knife, if that makes sense.

    The 119 has been my hunting knife for like 20 years. Also if you’re looking at self defense while hunting, you’re holding a bow, use the bow. But that knife would do damage.

    Bucks for the office. Bear and Sons bowie for weddings.
