Looking for any tip on using a strop.

So I just got this mini 4 sided strop. 2 sides are smooth leather and 2 are rough. I used diamond spray on one of each and for now left the other two without anything on them. I do have white compound and a green compound that I can use but idk if I should just leave the two sides raw or putting white on one side and green on the other. White is a coarser compound green is fine and the diamond spray is super fine. I’m definitely not a pro user so I’m looking for any tips. What effect would the plain leather have? And I’m guessing the rougher leather will be a coarser and the smoother side pretty fine.
